Los Angeles County DUI Statistics for New Year Down from 2010

As Los Angeles County residents rang in the new year of 2011, many were arrested for California DUI during the last few moments of a year when police stepped up their efforts to enforce these ever-harsher California DUI laws. However, statistics show that the number of people arrested for Los Angeles DUI was down from the previous New Year’s weekend, which is a good sign for many reasons.

According to the California Highway Patrol, there were a total of 228 people arrested in Los Angeles County for DUI between 6 p.m. on December 31 and 11:59 p.m. on January 2, a period that encompassed the holiday weekend. That number represents a drop from 264 during the previous New Year’s weekend. In addition, four people were killed in Los Angeles DUI accidents this year compared to six from the previous year. On a statewide basis, the number of people arrested for California DUI dropped to 961 from 1,388.

While these numbers are encouraging, it does mean that more than 200 people in Los Angeles County alone need to act quickly to defend their legal rights and to fight to retain their driving privileges. People who are arrested for DUI in the state have only 10 days from the date of their arrest to request a hearing with the California DMV in order to review their driving privileges. Failure to request this hearing will usually result in an automatic revocation of the right to drive.
